The big news today is that Allyson Felix has made her decision and she’s going to try the 200 meter / 400 meter double at the World Championships. She is also expected to be on both relays as well.
Is this an overreach? Maybe. More than anything else, it’s a dry run for next year’s Olympics. If she pulls that off, and the USA women’s 4×100 relay can get its act together*, she would win four Olympic gold medals. It would naturally bring comparisons to both Michael Johnson and Jesse Owens. Not only would it make her the most sought-after athlete of the Games, it would bring much-needed press to track & field. In other words, she would do for us what Michael Phelps did for swimming (but almost assuredly NOT get caught with a DUI or giant bong in the months afterwards).
And if it ends in spectacular failure in Daegu this year, well, so be it.
*I see this as far more challenging task than Felix winning a 200/400 double.
