Weekly College Awards — Women

This week I split my weekly college awards into two posts.

As an added bonus, I’ve compiled each event’s eight best marks of the weekend into a single .pdf file. Check it out — it’s color-coded and everything.

Let’s get to it!

Athlete of the Week

Makeba Alcide, Arkansas
At the Razorback Team Invitational, Alcide won the pentathlon with the score of 4464, which puts her 3rd on the all-time collegiate list. The only two others to score higher became Olympians; Jacquelyn Johnson (Arizona State) and Briane Theisen (Oregon). Alcide’s high jump clearance of 6′ 2¼” (1.89m) during the pentathlon is the third-best of the season.

Honorable Mention: Morgann Leleux, Georgia
Leleux won the pole vault at the Razorback Team Invitational with a clearance of 14′ 9″ (4.50m). That puts her in a tie for 4th on the all-time collegiate indoor list, and in a tie for 7th on the all-time indoor/outdoor combined list. She’s just a sophomore.

D-II Athlete of the Week: Sam Lockhart, Grand Valley State
Lockhart won the weight throw in a quadrangular against Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Hillsdale with a throw of 69′ 1¼” (21.06m), good for #5 on the 2013 all-division collegiate list. GVSU, the #1-ranked team in Division II and the defending indoor national champions, nearly won the meet over Eastern Michigan (the #9-ranked team in Track and Field News‘ dual meet rankings). But Lockhart isn’t even a lock to win her conference meet, the GLIAC, as Findlay’s Jessica Rowland threw 67′ 6″ (20.57m) over the weekend.

D-III Athlete of the Week: Michelle Favre, Ramapo
Favre won the pole vault at Bucknell’ Bison Open with a clearance of 13′ 7.25″ (4.15m), the 6th-best of the weekend by a collegian (regardless of division) and 11th on the 2013 all-division collegiate list. She is now 4th on the all-time D-III indoor list, and took three attempts at a D-III record 4.23 meters.

NAIA Athlete of the Week: Valencia Anderson, Wayland Baptist
Anderson won the 60 meter hurdles at the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational in a time of 8.50 seconds.

Team of the Week

Florida Gators
The Gators won the Razorback Team Invitational by a single point over LSU, last week’s honored team. They got big performances in the long sprints out of Kyra Jefferson, Ebony Eutsey and Lanie Whitaker. Ciarra Brewer had a big week in the shot put, and the 4×400 relay ran the year’s best time.

Team Players: Julia Perry and Brooke Astor, Lehigh
Perry and Astor led their Mountain Hawks to victory over archrivals Lafayette. Perry ran a tough double, winning the mile (5:03.55) and 1000 meters (2:57.40) in the space of 90 minutes. Astor won the 60 meter hurdles (8.78 seconds) and high jump (5′ 5″ / 1.65m) and took second in the long jump (17′ 8″ / 5.38m).

Chris Berman, have you thought of: Columbia’s sprinter, “S”Marvellous “S’Wonderful” Iheukwumere
